Highlights
As we get increasingly more concerned about cybersecurity, there are some basic steps we can take to protect ourselves better.
Having a secure password being a no-brainer but many of us, myself included, aren't always sure what qualifies as 'secure' enough.
I recently connected with Matthew H. Sturgess at an AI and cybersecurity event at The Great Room where he shared passionately on the topic of secure passwords, and sent me the below post-event. 😱
Matthew also shared some valuable, practical steps to create secure passwords that I wanted to pass along:
- Pick a memorable phrase: Use something meaningful, like a favorite quote, movie line, or song lyrics, and capitalize the first letter of each word.
🔒Example: IRememberItAllTooWell (from Taylor Swift's lyric)
- Add the account name: Include the name of the account you're using the password for.
🔒Example: IRememberItAllTooWellRedmart.
- Add some numbers: Incorporate a number that you can easily remember, such as your cat’s birthday.
🔒Example: ‘IRememberItAllTooWellRedmart0102`
- Include a punctuation mark:
Finish off with a special character, like
%
🔒Example: IRememberItAllTooWellRedmart0102%
- Use the same format across all accounts:
🔒Examples:
- IRememberItAllTooWellGoogle0102%
- IRememberItAllTooWellDBS0102%
- IRememberItAllTooWellSpotify0102%
-
Pick a fixed date or occasion: Select a time, such as Christmas, to change all your passwords each year.
-
If you write your password down: Write it on a piece of paper and keep it in a fire-proof safe.
Stay secure out there!
Matthew H. Sturgess Thank you for sharing the above, you will be happy to know that’s what I’ll be doing this weekend. 🤓
