Optimizing process parameters for high build rate and thin wall features is critical to ensure an efficient and reliable LPBF process. By increasing the build rate, LPBF can produce more parts in less time, which is particularly important for high-volume production. In addition, optimizing the process parameters for thin wall features enables the production of lightweight, complex structures with high accuracy and surface quality. This is especially important for applications such as aerospace, automotive, and medical devices, where weight reduction and miniaturization are critical design considerations. However, the challenge lies in finding the right balance between high build rate and thin wall features, as the two often require different process parameters.

Take a look at our results in the recent development work to optimise process parameters for titanium Ti64, which shows great ability not only to manufacture thin wall feature up to 150um with nearly fully density but also ensure the high production of bulk parts without discrepancy in mechanical properties. The parts are precisely built with a typical geometry tolerance of 15um and a surface roughness Ra of below 10um, consistently across the full build plate of the MetalFAB G2, measuring 420 x 420 mm. Part of a fun project: Printing stainless steel green part using a £2000 chocolate printer. The steel slurry was made up of 70 vol.% 17-4 PH powder (D90 23um) and 30 vol.% glycerine, LDPE and stearic acid in an aqueous solution. This recipe is far from perfect and required a fair amount of DOE work to get to the best result, but it demonstrated the viability of a low-budget metal 3d printer.
