"Hey Marc, is X done?" "Sure, pretty close!"
What's your guess: Is this really DONE? Will you be able to cross it off the list NOW?

Probably not, right? However, quite rightly in the Gartner quadrant the "ability to execute" is one of two decisive dimensions. How can you make sure you possess this rare quality?

One of the major problems in getting things done, in project management, in product development, and support is to make sure that whatever it is is really DONE. That it is EXECUTED. Only then can it create leverage.

Having shaped, structured, and led a ga-zillion of projects and worked with all kinds of people from automotive to pharma, from engineering to creatives, senior, super junior, I know from up close that this is probably one of the most decisive aspects to handle.

You might probably recognise this effect: People think it is "pretty much done," but is it? I also ran into that problem as a junior consultant when senior management disengaged after the main presentation as they felt "it is pretty much wrapped up" and piled up the next projects for me. Only to find that to really wrap it up and hand everything over to the client, it would still need another two days.

The problem is... if we let that happen, it will end up:

  • poor quality
  • open ends
  • you need to come back to it later when you are already totally somewhere else, which makes it much harder
  • someone will probably be annoyed as they did not get the info, the deliverable, at worst, not the result

So, what we need to do is to redefine the "what is complete here". This can mean the client releases the material and hands it over. This can mean the successful posting of a whole campaign. It can mean very different things, but after all, the question is:

Will this turn the button from zero to one? And from the proper perspective? (the user, client, x).

Then this question is simple to answer: If it doesn't, it is not complete. What would it need to get it from to ? Define that, then get it done. For this task, the next one, then the whole piece of work. This is how you gain massive power to execute.

Ever tried this or something similar? What works for you and your team to get solid results?

For a week, I have been digesting all that happened at SXSW, catching up with some (but not all, so sorry, will do asap!) folks I've met, reflecting about which (!) insights to turn into which actions (and how?). There is a LOT of those! But maybe it comes down to a feeling that is connected with this video...

So if you ask what my "takeaways" are, though there are many detailed takeaways worth sharing later; still, they distil in this atmosphere:

After having chatted with a serial software entrepreneur turning fashion brand,

as well as with a surfer who also is a marketing colleague,

having helped a startup founder over a sip of white wine on the roof terrasse about their positioning,

only to - on the very same day/night -

being able to stumble over one of my fav' music gigs at the "French House", @French79 with very nice and fun company Victoria Kaeser, dancing and jumping for 2hrs+ in good ol' clubster mode (no extra workout needed!),

the next day, heading out again for networking at the Scotch House, stumble into more humans of this fascinatingly diverse global village,

heading to a long-haul flight, waiting for 'that jetlag' to happen, but surprisingly, just coming home...

💦 Refreshed. 💦

Who else can find that fun and inspiration to be the best energy recharge ever? Does anyone else want to out them as a happy electro clubster? :)
