No 1:1’s?

Jensen Huang spoke earlier this summer on his team

He has an outstanding 60 direct reports!

He doesn’t do 1:1’s and one reason is that he wants everyone to have equal access to information

This unsiloed approach helps everyone to learn from one another. The moderator asked him what about giving feedback and his response is gold:

“Feedback is done right there in front of everyone. Feedback is learning, for what reason should you be the only person to learn? … We should all learn from this opportunity. To take feedback into a 1:1 you deprive others form this learning”

At startups we need to have speed. One way to ensure speed is to cut out the hierarchy. Have a culture where everyone learns from one another.

I still have 1:1s but this challenged my approach - I’m thinking about mixing things up and changing the cadence/goals of them.  The time saved can open up more team meetings for learnings.

What do you think about the 1:1 approach?

Be like a lion.

Lions are awesome - They are strategic when they hunt.

Lions wait for the right prey. They aren’t just eating little bugs as they come across them. They conserve their energy and wait for the right prey like a gazelle to come along.

Then it’s an all out sprint to catch that gazelle and feast.

It’s the same with work. We should find the right opportunities to pursue and then pursue them with rigor, sprint hard at these goals with big impact.

The opposite example is a cow. Cows graze all day on grass. It’s what they are designed to do but a very different approach.  In the workplace we have many low impact things that we can easily do, you can get them done while on autopilot but at the end of the day it’s not going to move your company forward.

Get up and find big things to solve. Then sprint and solve them with everything you got!

Be a lion.
