It's really sad to see how hard and unsafe it has become to walk in Bengaluru. I recently decided to walk from Marathahalli to Agara with my 9-year-old son, thinking it would be a nice way to spend time together. But instead of being a simple, pleasant walk, it turned out to be a frustrating and upsetting experience. The sidewalks are in terrible shape—they’re uneven, broken, and full of trash. We couldn’t walk more than a few steps without having to step onto the road to avoid the mess. But stepping onto the road felt dangerous, with cars and bikes speeding by without caring about people walking. It was scary every time we had to leave the sidewalk. We didn’t even finish our walk. The fear and stress of trying to walk on those unsafe roads made us turn back. It’s heartbreaking that something as simple as walking down the street with your child has become so difficult and unsafe. I felt really sad that we’ve lost the ability to enjoy these simple moments with our families. It wasn’t always like this. I remember when I was a child, we could easily walk around our neighborhood, go to the grocery store, or just enjoy a stroll outside. The streets were safer and more welcoming. But now, the city is so crowded that we feel trapped. We’re stuck inside our homes or, at best, can only walk within our apartment complexes, which feels so fake and disconnected. The simple joy of walking freely in the city, seeing neighbors, and feeling a part of the community is slipping away, replaced by a feeling of being isolated within the concrete walls around us.
