Highlights
An incredibly well written article published by the American Psychological Association outlining the mental health impact for women and children from restricting abortion access.
Today we heard that Roe v. Wade has been overturned. The news shook me, and I’m still grappling with the fear I have for what the future will look like for my daughter, and the millions of other people who lost important rights today.
But my concern goes beyond personal beliefs or politics. It’s an issue of health equity and deeply impacts pediatric mental health. Restricting access to abortion harms the mental health of caregivers. It has a negative impact on the financial security of families, leads to increased rates of domestic abuse among families, as well as increased rates of depression and suicides (see APA article below) – all of which have a profound effect on the health of children and families. This decision will further exacerbate existing, deeply rooted, and systemic health inequities – and be hardest felt by communities that already lack adequate resources for both reproductive and mental health.
At Brightline we are committed to providing time-off and covering travel and other expenses for our employees to access medical procedures that are unavailable where they live. And as families navigate these untimely changes, we continue to provide coaching and therapy services to those in need of support. We are here for you.
