A new report by Climate Analytics has set out the full carbon footprint of Australia’s fossil fuels.

Australia has one of the largest per capita emissions for all greenhouse gases, double that of China, and nine times bigger than India.

Australia was the third largest fossil fuel exporter in 2021. But in terms of the total greenhouse gas footprint arising from those exports, Australia ranked second.

Unfortunately, just when we need to be cutting emissions, Australia is doubling down on fossil gas extraction mainly for LNG production and export.

But rather than decreasing, CO₂ emissions from Australia’s fossil fuel exports are set to increase under current government policies.

Between 2023 and 2035, Australia’s fossil fuel exports alone would consume around 7.5% of the world’s estimated remaining global carbon budget of about 200 billion tonnes of CO₂.

If we include domestic CO₂ emissions from current policies, this means by 2035 Australia, with 0.3% of the world’s population, would consume 9% of the total remaining carbon budget.

The United Nations has just formally outlined its opposition to overreliance on voluntary carbon offsets.

In a document obtained by Financial Times, the UN has said that it is opposed to companies using credits (outside of state regulated schemes) to cancel out their carbon dioxide footprint.

The report says that companies should not rely on "offsets" to deliver emissions reductions - but rather work across their value chain to do more reductions internally. In other words, companies ought to focus on reducing their own emissions and should not rely on offsets to do the job for them.

Globally, there is an overreliance on offsets as a climate solution. This can undermine the transition to a zero-carbon economy.

Beyond the integrity issues that often plague the carbon credit market, offsets may be allowing for the continuation and expansion of climate pollution.

Companies and governments should be focusing on genuinely curbing their own emissions, utilising offsets only in exceptionally rare cases where no viable, immediate alternative exists.

And offsets should not count as the polluters’ own emissions reductions.
