Highlights
Here goes nothing: I lost my job a few months back. And as someone who truly loves to communicate - I haven’t known what the hell to say.
Odds are that this won’t be the first post of this kind that you’ve read. It might not even be the first you’ve read this week. For most of us, the last year or so saw LinkedIn rapidly morph this groundhog-day scrolling experience of oh-so-many talented people abruptly #opentowork. My feed was overrun with job loss announcements. Some were emotional, some were angry, more than few were intimidatingly impressive. I thought all of them were brave. Then without warning their words rang truer than I ever wanted them to as I, too, sadly joined the #layoff legions.
A step I haven’t properly taken yet is reaching out to the rich and vast network I’ve built over the years. I grappled with doing it in a way where I was being true to myself - both sincere and straight-talking. So while yes, I shared conflicted feelings about penning such a post these 500 words have somewhat snook up on me. Equal parts sorting my thoughts and flaunting my flair = an accidental love letter to LinkedIn.
I’ve needed time to really evaluate what could and should be next. I have a mountain of experience across marketing, content, communications, events, and know I’m hyper-adaptable across roles and environments. In theory, this should leave me with a lot of options - right? But what this contemplative chapter actually showed me was that I had some decisions to make. What do I want? What did I love doing before? What would I be the most excited about jumping into? In other words - time to pinpoint my own north star 🤓
This has meant taking time to reflect on my own personal highlights reel of the wins that have felt best. For example:
⭕ Making content marketing WORK → doubled web conversions (CTR) from 3.5% to 7%
⭕ Effective comms → writing for, targeting and engaging with all audiences #B2B #B2C
⭕ Building + optimising processes → growing asset output by over 100% in 6 months
⭕ Brand/content strategy → 10 years experience
⭕ Accelerator accepted → 10 startups from over 1,000 chosen for Techstars Berlin
⭕ Launching + owning projects → event lead for 5,000 person conference + 1,000 pax stages featuring/creating new revenue streams from Tommy Hilfiger, Vogue, Levis + more with Web Summit
⭕ Copy all day → brand campaigns, ads, blogs, newsletters, social media, email, programmes, marketing collateral, in-app, fundraising, live talks, press releases - you get the vibe 🖋️
I feel that tech has been caught with its pants down, and it’s a brave new #content world out there as budgets, strategies, org structures and more are reassessed from the ground up. It’s pretty understandable then that in some ways this muteness of mine comes more from a meta perspective vs a circumstantial one.
