Highlights
10 years ago, YouTube launched its first-party application on the PlayStation 3 in the United States. (https://lnkd.in/gnt_iUFV)
What made the PS3 launch special? There already were ways to consume YouTube on the "big screen", but this was the first purely HTML5 YouTube Living Room application, as well as the first usage of "Steel" (the Chromium-port precursor to Cobalt (https://cobalt.foo)).
This application has survived a decade of continual improvements and branching to become the de-facto YouTube application in the Living Room worldwide. If you use YouTube or YouTube TV on one of the following devices, then you're actually seeing a continued evolution of this application's codebase:
- Smart TVs (LG, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, and pretty much everyone else)
- OTTs: Roku, Chromecast, Android TV, Apple TV
- PlayStation (3, 4, 4 Pro, and presumably 5)
- Xbox (360, One, One S/X, and presumably Series S/X)
- Nintendo (Switch, Wii U)
- ...and, at least in 2020, Amazon Fire TV and Comcast Xfinity boxes
So big congratulations to my friends over at the YouTube Living Room team and all they've accomplished in the past decade! Here's to a decade more of YouTube in the Living Room!
And for a quick throwback, here are a couple videos from that initial PS3 launch, featuring that fun UI we internally called "super-scroller":
