Highlights
Employees can legally ignore after-hours calls or messages from their boss from today, thanks to our new Right to Disconnect law here in Australia.
Self-employed people, on the other hand, don't have this.
My bedroom is 3 steps from my home office. It's very easy for me to jump on the computer at any time. And, I can articulately convince myself that, as I'm the boss, the time I invest is invested into my future profits and growth.
Except (except). My lack of boundaries have come at a big cost.
Before the birth of my first baby, 15 years ago, I emailed my clients and told them I was taking 2 weeks maternity leave (hahahaha. 2 weeks!!!). I asked for them to not contact me except in an emergency.
Except (except) I had no boundaries, didn't I?
So of course I checked my email, and one client (a young woman) asked me to contact her "as it's an emergency".
Except (except) there are no emergencies in marketing. But, being a people pleasing, energetic, lack-of-boundaries business owner, I did what I was asked, and called her.
My maternity leave was 5 days. And then I was back into it.
My second baby, less than two years later, was no better.
Laws are awesome. I am a strong believer in good, solid legislation.
But we need more than that.
We need to recognise that our digital world is making us wired, tired, anxious, overwhelmed, hyper-vigilant, and more disconnected than ever.
Every single day, I see evidence of self-employed people who have no boundaries around their business.
As business owners, we need to recognise the necessity of those solid reliables: exercise, nutrition, sleep, regular, dedicated, scheduled time with friends (not just family), hobbies, holidays, and all that good stuff.
Every business owner I work with we ALWAYS discuss this stuff. Because our brains need to be healthy if we're to work optimally. And all this is 100% necessary, especially in the 21st century.
Nowadays, I actually have boundaries with work. I'm a late bloomer with this. But I know exactly how important they are, and I guard them intensely.
If you want to talk about how better boundaries will have a measurably impact on your profits, reach out. I can demonstrate this extensively; I'm keeping the receipts.

What I've focused on over the last 16+ years in business is growing a highly profitable business with a small(ish) audience, without ads and other paid marketing endeavours.
I've done this successfully for myself, as well as on behalf of my clients, many of whom have small numbers on social media and email list sizes of 1-2000 subscribers.
So it was an absolute delight to work with Keppie Coutts from 'How to Write Songs' who had grown an absolutely massive audience on YouTube - 80K subscribers when we started working together, and 110K when we finished.
I'm a music lover, dancefloor starter, conversion specialist and digital marketing geek, so this client was a dream come true.
