With German June trade data out, time for an update: No big surprise, but Germany's export share to China continues to tumble in 2024, reaching 6% in H1 so far. That is the same level as in 2015 (and much of the early 2010 years). Exports to China down by 9.9% in June and 2.7% in H1. Hard to see a rebound anytime soon - if ever. Keep in mind the current weakness of the Chinese economy is in consumption and real esate, not the industrial sector mostly relevant for German exports. The question will be what is the floor and how will China's exports impact Germany's overall exports in the future (down 1.6% in H1). Looks like a tough adjustment phase ahead.

Chinese investments in the EU-27 and UK fell to EUR 6.8 billion in 2023, the lowest level since 2010. These investments are concentrated in a handful of greenfield EV supply chain projects, with the bulk going to Hungary. However, it’s worthwhile to look beyond the main story. Healthcare stands out as a sector that has attracted robust interest from Chinese investors over the past years, making it the second most important sector in 2023. Medical devices and pharma/biotech have emerged as predominant areas of interest, with Chinese companies acquiring European companies in these fields.
