KEEP GOING, KEEP FIGHTING

Congrats to Cheung Ka-long for taking home a gold for Hong Kong!

The #Olympics are the pinnacle of achievement for any athlete in their respective field. What does it take to reach the pinnacle?

One of the key factors is resilience: everytime you fail, you get back up and try again until you succeed. This is true in sports (one of the reasons I love surfing is every wipeout is a test of how much you want to get better) but also true in product.

MOST of the features you launch will fail to have impact. MOST of the products you ship will not hit PMF. Even the best PMs have a mediocre-at-best batting ratio because user behaviour is hard to predict.

What matters is shots on goal: how many times do you try, and how quickly are you trying again?

"I think our spirit is to never give up, to try our best to get everything [and to give everything on the piste. I don’t want to have any excuses and waste my efforts from training. I just keep going, keep fighting. This is how it is."

"Only by challenging better can we continue to be better"

This motto sounds like it belongs in a tech company's list of cultural values, but believe it or not it's actually the motto of a yogurt chain in China (Bluegrass Yogurt). But I think everyone working on product should live and breathe this motto.

All of the innovation and amazing products we see in the world today only exist because someone "challenged better"; someone looked at the existing world and the existing way things are done and thought: why can't we be better?

  • Travis Kalanick thought "cabs suck, can we be better?" and invented Uber
  • Dylan Field thought "our existing design stack sucks, can we be better?" and invented Figma
  • Jack Zhang thought "international payments suck, can we be better?" and invented Airwallex
  • Everyday, top-tier PMs, Designers, Engineers think "{X} sucks, can we be better?"

In order to build better products, we need to think from first principles and re-imagine what the ideal product experience should be, rather than just accepting the status quo. In today's day and age, it's all too easy to just "copy homework" when it comes to designing solutions to customer problems.

Being better means not compromising because your competitor shipped a mediocre solution. Being better means not accepting the solution that incumbents have. Being better means not cutting corners on product quality because it saves execution time. Being better means innovating and creating something new.

If you're interested in challenging better and being better, I'm hiring for talented Product Managers & Product Operations Managers at Thailand's leading on demand services company (LINEMAN WONGNAI). You'll work with a talented, driven team based in Thailand and China to re-imagine what food delivery and ridehailing can look like.
